Absolutely Positively Not by David LaRochelle

May 20 to 28, 2013
genre: GLBT
What was truly remarkable about this book was how real it was, though also unbelievable on many points. There were well written characters if not fully developed, the conflict of denial and process of coming out, thoughtful setting of school and home environment if not very detailed, and a realistic story. I know it is a light and humorous read, and that's how I felt about it!

I thought the legend of the dog date Kelly being taken to prom was a bit unnecessary, and also Rachel's support of a "visionary" figure. You'd expect the girl best friend to be way more helpful for the main character, but she lacked very much in this area. Hey, though, life isn't perfect like that.

I liked the turn in how Steven had to go on a quest to seek support for his sexuality, though I would have preferred the book ending after he and Carp meets and talks (not necessarily for any romantic interest.)

Do read this if you need a true and light reading into the experience of "coming out".
